DICK GAUGHAN - touring information

One or two developments in Dick's November-December 2011 UK tour, and some other stuff, prompt this note.

For the Nov-Dec tour I need to connect gigs which are currently a bit isolated from each other (see tour itinerary below).

(A) north country gigs are needed to fill in the five days between Whitby (Sun 6 Nov) and Sheffield (Sat 12 Nov).
(B) gigs in the Midlands en route London would close down the gap from Sun 13 to Thu 17 Nov.
(C) gigs in Eastern England or perhaps Southern England would help in the gap Sat 19 to Thu 24 Nov plus Sat 26 Nov.
(D) gigs in Southern England en route the west country on Tue 29-Wed 30 Nov and Thu 1 Dec would work.

The Sheffield date may yet happen on Sun 4 Dec instead of Nov 12 in which case there's a very long gap to fill before The Ram FC on Fri 18 Nov. Gigs in that case could be just about anywhere east<>west, north>south from Whitby onwards including Wales as well as England.

NOVEMBER 2011
Sun 6 tbc --- Whitby Musicport
Mon 7 to Fri 11 available

Sat 12 tbc --- Sheffield, Greystone (see Dec 4 alt)
Sun 13 to Thu 17 available
Fri 18 London Ram FC
Sat 19 to Thu 24 available

Fri 25 Cambridge
Sat 26 available
Sun 27 London, Walthamstow Folk Club
Mon 28 tbc --- Nettlebed
Tue 29 and Wed 30 available

If the Sheffield date does end up on Nov 12 rather than Dec 4, then gigs in Wales or the English Midlands might be feasible between Wolverhampton and York. However if Sheffield does happen on Dec 4 then I think I'd just be after gigs simply travelling north to York after Wolverhampton.

DECEMBER 2011
Thu 1 available
Fri 2 Bath FC
Sat 3 Wolverhampton Newhampt
on FC
Sun 4 tbc --- Sheffield, Greystones (see Nov 12 alt)
Mon 5 to Wed 7 available
Thu 8 York, Black Swan FC (with a likely additional gig on either Dec 7 or 9; tbc)
Fri 9 available
Sat 10 Hebden Bridge Trades Club
/tour ends

In May 2011 Dick's got a few Scottish gigs before heading south to tour in June 2011

JUNE 2011
Tue 7 or Wed 8 available
Thu 9 Frome, Merlin Theatre & Arts Centre
Fri 10 Marlborough Folk-Roots
Sat 11 Bristol, Ash Keys Music
Sun 12 off
Mon 13 Farnham Maltings
Tue 14 Winchester Railway
Wed 15 off
Thu 16 St Albans, Redbourne FC
Fri 17 London, Goose Is Out
Sat 18 Barnt Green, Shining Friends
Sun 19 or Mon 20 available
Tue 21 Northampton FC
Wed 22 or Thu 23 available
Fri 24 Dentdale Music and Beer Festival
Sat 25 Glasgow/Milngavie
Wed 29 tbc --- Aboyne Arts Festival, Aberdeenshire

JULY 2011 - CANADA (with Jason Wilson Band www.jasonwilsonmusic.com/)
In July Dick heads off to Canada until possibly early August for festival gigs with the Jason Wilson Band (left) from Toronto with whom he appeared so successfully at Celtic Connections in Jan 2010.

After the band's new album ('The Lion Rampant') comes out over here in 2012 featuring Dick, Dave Swarbrick and The Bevvy Sisters we'll be fixing to tour this line-up here probably in the summer - this is just a bit special!

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSy1_wBdkiE for the band's take on "My Love is like a Red Red Rose (Burns) and "No Woman No Cry" (Bob Marley) - this segue really does work (inc. a neat fiddle solo from Dave Swarbrick) and after being broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland last autumn produced quite a flurry of interest.

In fact, and following on from that, I've been told that United Airlines flights into British Columbia will be playing 'My Love is Like a Red Red Rose/No Woman, No Cry' in July in advance of the Vancouver festival. Can't be bad! :)

New Monthly Concert Season At 28 York Place, Edinburgh EH1 3EP

28 York Place ticketing info: All tickets for all concerts only £10. Contact Jim Welsh by text messsage on 07717-88 58 55 or email Jim on either jim@stoneyport.com or jwwelsh@btinternet.com to buy tickets.

For all concerts - doors (and bar) from 7:30pm; show-time 8:00pm.

ON SUNDAY 17 OCTOBER 2010 we restart monthly concerts in 28 York Place, Edinburgh EH1 3EP.

This first concert is seriously top value for money (but of course they all are!!) with that remarkable one-man blues band MIKE WHELLANS (http://mikewhellans.com) heading up a three-hander show. Mike Whellans' music is straight down the line, good rockin' 12-bar blues played in his inimitable style on 6/12-string guitars (picked with great precision and at eye-watering speed), mouth-harp (packed with music - it's as if he's filled them up with great music and then he just blows it all out towards you), and a wee tottie drum-kit. And the other things he can do with his mouth? Well, you've just got to see and hear his show-stopping vocal percussion - a real tour de force - just got to be witnessed to be believed (catch his self-penned "Smile on Your Face" and his take on Jack Bruce's & Ginger Baker's "Train Time" - mighty!). Added to this he sings, is a drummer of no slight talent, writes songs, and seems to have boundless energy.

The other acts this first night are David Vernon (accordion) & Dick Lee (reeds). Dave and Dick are virtuosi from quite different musical backgrounds who share an infectious enjoyment of performing great music drawn from a wide range of genres expertly played. Expect to hear a mixture of Jewish wedding dances, South American Tango, folk tunes from the Balkans, French Musette and a whole variety of other surprises. A world-wide musical tour. (see http://www.davidvernonanddicklee.com)

Plus, not only that, but also Paul Johnston, the dynamic front man from Shetland's 'Rock Salt & Nails'. Paul's blurb in the recent AMC @ St Bride's programme said: " ... guaranteed to be Entertaining, Exciting & Enchanting. This night of self-penned songs will have you clapping, crying, and shouting for more. 'A manic mix of contemporary observational song.' (The Mid Yell Daily News) 'Miss this show at your peril, Paul will have you screaming for more, dancing on the tables & having the time of you life.' (The Baltasound Bugle)". Paul's AMC show more or less sold out by the way.

The second concert (more details later) in this autumn series will be on SUNDAY 14 NOVEMBER with SALLY BARKER'S great tribute show, "The Joni Mitchell Project" (see http://web.me.com/sallybarker/Joni_Mitchell_Project/Home.html) which wowed a very busy house in the 250-seat Big Room at AMC @ St Bride's in August.

Finally, just before Christmas - party night! SUNDAY 12 DECEMBER sees those excellent and irrepressible songstresses in harmony, The BEVVY SISTERS (www.myspace.com/thebevvysisters), headline with special guest Sharon King (www.myspace.com/sharonkingandthenevernevercowboys) opening the show.

Lulo Reinhardt Project UK tour

LULO REINHARDT

One of Europe’s finest gypsy guitarists from one of the most famous gypsy families

WORLD TOUR 2010

" ... finest concert of acoustic guitar I have ever seen ... " (John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald)

DON'T MISS out on the first UK tour of this unique show of gypsy guitar legend Lulo Reinhardt complete with six-piece band. Lulo Reinhardt is, of course, the grand-nephew of jazz legend Django Reinhardt. But the family's musical ties run deeper than that for Lulo is also the nephew of the gypsy violin master Shnuckenack Reinhardt and comes from a lineage peppered throughout with highly talented musicians.

Lulo represents one of the most unique voices in gypsy-jazz music today. His Latin-Swing Project (see http://www.myspace.com/luloreinhardt) combines pure gypsy-swing music with elements of Latin music such as flamenco, tango, and bossa nova.

The band comprises ...

Lulo Reinhardt: Germany (guitar)

Daniel Weltlinger: Sydney, Australia (violin)

Harald Becher: Germany (bass)

Uli Kramer: Germany (drums)

Sean Mackenzie: Sydney, Australia (keyboards)

"Lulo Reinhardt is a spontaneous and spirited musician who is led by the guitar into musical voyages of discovery. His curiosity has taken him to southern Spain in search of flamenco roots, and to South America, exploring various musical styles of Latin Jazz. Lulo expresses his artistic personality in his gypsy influences, reflecting his character.

"Lulo Reinhardt´s music reveals his enthusiasm for virtuosity and spontaneity and at the same time, a deep melancholy and nostalgia - more imagination than reality. Inspiration and feeling of the gypsies are moulded by Lulo Reinhardt into a rythmic flowing symbiosis of elegance and spirit." (Manuel Dominguez, Nubenegra/Madrid)

Lulo Reinhardt is from an enormous clan of Reinhar
dts to which belongs his grand-uncle, the world famous musician Django Reinhardt. "The audience often expects me to play exclusively in the style of Django Reinhardt but, as well as being able to do this, I have found a style of my own."

Lulo was taught guitar by his father since the age of five. At only twelve years old, he was playing with the Mike Reinhardt Sextet, a formation entirely dedicated to the gypsy swing of Django Reinhardt.

In 1991, Lulo moved on from the sextet to explore new musical experiences and founded, with his father Bawo and cousin Degé, "I Gitanos", which toured throughout Europe. The first results of their exciting 'new way' gypsy music showed a strong Latin music influence in which the master timbalero and percussionist Nicky Marrero participated, and led to the release of the CD, "I suni" in 1994. Since then, there have been numerous successful tours throughout Europe and the release of the next CD, "AB I Reisa" (1998). Meanwhile, however, Lulo worked on various projects and established for himself an international reputation as an outstanding composer and guitarist.

Lulo has played in numerous major events as Rock Gegen Hass, International Cultural Festival Sahara en el Corazón (Algeria - with Brazilian guitarist Zezo Ribeiro), World Roma Festival Khamoro, Jazz Goes to Town (Czech Republic), Jazz and Blues Festival (Czech Republic), and many others.

The Lulo Reinhardt Project is the accomplishment of a maturing style and artistic creation, which defies classification. Swinging from tune to tune, Lulo Reinhardt injects into his music his gypsy roots as well as flamenco and Latin rhythms from Cuba to Brazil. After the success of his CD, "Project No 1" (2002), Lulo Reinhardt released the eagerly awaited, "Project No 2", (2005) to critical acclaim.

In 2008 Lulo delighted new audiences in Australia during a small but highly successful tour. From this tour, a live album and DVD were produced.

Then in 2009, Lulo toured successfully in the UK, Canada and the USA with the International Guitar Night show, in Europe, and then again in Australia.

Now, with a band of extremely carefully chosen musicians with whom he has worked previously joining him in his musical fantasia, Lulo Reinhardt has a world-class show with which to enchant any audience.

International Guitar Night

The fourth International Guitar Night UK tour takes place in September-October 2010 (see current itinerary below) and comprises three highly talented, modern acoustic guitar stylists from quite different backgrounds. As you can see from the itinerary below we have several spaces to fill; do get in touch.

Brian Gore (http://www.guitarpoet.com/) from San Francisco, USA

“Brian Gore’s strong, well developed melodies and intriguing chord sequences set him apart from the myriad steel-string fingerstylists who compose in open tunings. His finely crafted poetic “songs without words” take the listener on a spellbinding emotional ride.”
Ron Forbes Roberts, Acoustic Guitar Magazine

Brian founded The International Guitar Night in 1995 as a forum for the world’s finest guitarists/composers to play their latest original songs and share musical ideas with their peers in public concert. This has evolved into critically acclaimed annual tours in the US (since 2000), Canada (2006) and the UK (2007).

Alexandre Gismonti (http://www.alexandregismonti.com/) from Brazil

"With his father, the legendary Egberto Gismonti, he has played in major theaters and festivals in Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Cuba, México, the Dominican Republic, Italy, Spain, Israel, Denmark, Portugal, and France."

"The son of Egberto is a young guitar virtuoso. Alexandre`s approach is very different from that of his father…he played with an amazing interpretive authority for his age of 20”. Brecha newspaper, Uruguay, July 2001

Pino Forastiere
(http://www.forastiere.it/) from Rome, Italy

"It’s hard to find a CD for solo instrument that could be completely appreciated also by non-instrumentists: here is one."
Daniele Bergesio, World Music Magazine

Check out each player's background at http://guitaristbriangore.wordpress.com/2009/11/03/international-guitar-night-uk-2010-edition/. You'll also find YouTube clips there from each of the players. The show on-stage, of course, comprises solos, duets and ensemble pieces.

In previous tours this aspect of IGN has proved to be very successful and I'd be very pleased to discuss this.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Cheers
