Ten Fringe sell-out laurels for shows at AMC @ St Bride's in 2011

With sales of 95% or more of capacity, 12 shows from this year's season at Acoustic Music Centre @ St Bride's have been given Edinburgh Festival Fringe 'official' sell-out laurels (left). This represents about 11% of all the shows which took place this year and is just about the same as AMC 2010. All the laurels went to shows given by Edinburgh-based or Scottish acts.

The shows are ...
Big Room (235 seats)
North Sea Gas (1 perf)
Benny Gallagher (1 perf)
Michael Marra (1 perf)

Back Room (50 seats)
Ragged Glory (2 perfs)
Nick Keir (1 perf)
Kirsty Law (1 perf)
Mike Whellans (1 perf)
Playing Politics (1 perf) - see http://www.fringereview.co.uk/fringeReview/4324.html
Soopna (2 perfs)
Emily Scott (1 perf).

Congratulations to all concerned!

In addition the 23 performances selling 80% or more in both spaces at AMC represented about 21% (2740 seats) of all available seats.

Big Room top sellers (80%+)
North Sea Gas
Sing In The City (Aug 26)
Sing In The City (Aug 12)
Benny Gallagher
Michael Marra
Sing In The City (Aug 25)
Spooky Men's Chorale (Aug 21)
Absolutely Legless Aug 19
Sing In The City (Aug 11)

Back Room top sellers (80%+)
Ragged Glory (Aug 20 and 27)
Nick Keir
Kirsty Law
Mike Whellans
Playing Politics (Aug 20)
Soopna (Aug 20 and 27)
Emily Scott
Leave My Balcony Open (Aug 23 and 24)
Alice Cavaye (Aug 17)
What's In The Water?
Dustbowl Blues (Aug 26)

Again, Edinburgh-based or Scottish acts feature very strongly in this longer list with only one non-Scottish act from the total of 17 acts (the ever-popular Australian, "Spooky Men's Chorale" on their third visit to AMC @ St Bride's).

More congratulations to all concerned!

At AMC @ St Bride's in 2010, 25 performances sold 80% or more tickets with some 13 (11%) qualifying for sell-out laurels: very consistent!

GYPSY JAZZ, PUPPETS, WORLD-FAMOUS GUITARIST ALL AT AMC @ ST BRIDE'S

AMC @ ST BRIDE’S: MEDIA ACTS ADVISORY:
EDITION 1: 26.7.2011

ALEX YELLOWLEES: By day Alex is a psychiatrist and a medical director of the Priory, Glasgow. By night the Perthshire-based musician celebrates Grappelli and Django and the gypsy in all of us at his Fringe gig.
MICK AND MICHAEL GROVES: Father and son at the Festival. Mick Groves – Still Spinning. His band, The Spinners, received a lifetime achievement award at last weekend’s Acoustic Music Festival of Great Britain. Michael, his son, who is based in Edinburgh, is producing a show at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival. SING IN THE CITY: None of the choir are professional singers, they are parents, grandparents, procurator fiscals, debt managers, hairdressers etc. Most are based in Edinburgh and they joined SitC for multiple reasons, to see if they could sing, to help with depression, to take their mind of bereavements. The majority used to attend council organised singing for fun classes. They have done two sell-out own shows and a corporate performance for British Gas to launch their solar panels. PRESTON REED: Scottish-based Preston (he lives in Girvan) is working with a Scottish based luthier using reclaimed woods for his new signature guitar. The world-famous guitarist also loves to cook and is becoming an avid photographer. Contact: scarycath@gmail.com
COLIN CLYNE: Originally from Stonehaven, Colin was recently nominated in the San Diego, California, music awards for acoustic music. He is on a Scottish tour including Glasgow, Edinburgh (AMC @ St Bride’s, August 13 @ 6pm), Isle of Skye, Inverness and Aberdeen.
PUPPETS: Nearly 30 years ago, Victor Torre and Maria José de la Rosa decided to start the company Theatre and Puppets Sol y Tierra dedicated to work with educational values for children. They have toured in Mexico, Sweden, Austria, San Salvador, Portugal, France, Venezuela, Taiwan, Marrakech from their base is in Madrid, Spain.
Their show The Princess and The Dragon is accessible to children of all ages from '5 to 95', people with special needs and retirement age people.

LOCAL SHOWS TOP AMC CHARTS IN FRINGE BUILD-UP

LOCAL shows top the sales charts at the Acoustic Music Centre @ St Bride’s in the build-up to next month’s Fringe.
Sing In The City have sold out one of their four shows already and the AMC @ St Bride’s doesn't open until Monday, August 8.
They appear in the 250-seat Big Room and the top five sellers there are all local/Edinburgh-based shows apart from Dundonian Michael Marra.
In the 50-seat Back Room, eight of the top 12 are Edinburgh-based, or nearby.
Ragged Glory come from Lasswade, Midlothian, with two Borders-based acts also doing well, Mike Whellans from Lauder and Kirsty Law from Heriot.
Canadian trio with an Edinburgh connection What's In The Water are also selling well.

AMC AT ST BRIDE'S AHEAD OF TARGET

BOSSES at The Acoustic Music Centre at St Bride’s report a rush to the box-office.
Sales for the venue are nearly 24 per cent ahead of the equivalent date last summer.
John Barrow, the organiser, said: “This is a significant figure given that we are in the grips of a recession.”
The AMC at St Bride’s presents nearly 70 acts over the three week Festival from Monday, August 8.
Among the top names are Benny Gallagher, formerly of Gallagher and Lyle, and world-famous guitarist, Preston Reed.
International acts include those from Hong Kong, Spain and Slovenia.
Mr Barrow added: “We are pleased to report that a number of the bookings are repeat customers from previous years.
“They like what they see and are confident in coming back for more.”

Wrigley Sisters - New CD, "IDIOM"

New Release: IDIOM (Geosound: GSCD002)

COMBINING mastery with mischief, tradition with modernity, Jennifer and Hazel Wrigley, the internationally acclaimed fiddle and guitar duo from the Orkney Islands, have a magical new CD IDIOM – a way of speaking, of expressing oneself.

This is their first CD since Skyran (10 years ago!) and marks 20 years since their first album, Dancing Fingers, (released when they were a mere 16 years old!).

IDIOM is a sparkling blend of traditional, contemporary and original material, invigorated with jazz, blues and ragtime flavours.

IDIOM, like an Orkney sunrise, bursts with light, colour and outrageous and dizzying energy.

IDIOM has woken the timeless standing stones of Orkney and made them dance again.

IDIOM reflects a confidence and maturity honed from years of touring and playing.

IDIOM is just what you've come to expect from this talented duo – there's that lovely lightness of touch so the music fairly skips along, a great sense of fun, great musicianship from all concerned, and an unerring sense of what sounds, 'right'.

Now to figure out some time away from running 'The Reel', their very successful music school in Kirkwall, to tour.

They're at Shetland Folk Festival (late April/early May), St Magnus Fes (June) and at AMC @ St Bride's (Aug).

DICK GAUGHAN - touring information

One or two developments in Dick's November-December 2011 UK tour, and some other stuff, prompt this note.

For the Nov-Dec tour I need to connect gigs which are currently a bit isolated from each other (see tour itinerary below).

(A) north country gigs are needed to fill in the five days between Whitby (Sun 6 Nov) and Sheffield (Sat 12 Nov).
(B) gigs in the Midlands en route London would close down the gap from Sun 13 to Thu 17 Nov.
(C) gigs in Eastern England or perhaps Southern England would help in the gap Sat 19 to Thu 24 Nov plus Sat 26 Nov.
(D) gigs in Southern England en route the west country on Tue 29-Wed 30 Nov and Thu 1 Dec would work.

The Sheffield date may yet happen on Sun 4 Dec instead of Nov 12 in which case there's a very long gap to fill before The Ram FC on Fri 18 Nov. Gigs in that case could be just about anywhere east<>west, north>south from Whitby onwards including Wales as well as England.

NOVEMBER 2011
Sun 6 tbc --- Whitby Musicport
Mon 7 to Fri 11 available

Sat 12 tbc --- Sheffield, Greystone (see Dec 4 alt)
Sun 13 to Thu 17 available
Fri 18 London Ram FC
Sat 19 to Thu 24 available

Fri 25 Cambridge
Sat 26 available
Sun 27 London, Walthamstow Folk Club
Mon 28 tbc --- Nettlebed
Tue 29 and Wed 30 available

If the Sheffield date does end up on Nov 12 rather than Dec 4, then gigs in Wales or the English Midlands might be feasible between Wolverhampton and York. However if Sheffield does happen on Dec 4 then I think I'd just be after gigs simply travelling north to York after Wolverhampton.

DECEMBER 2011
Thu 1 available
Fri 2 Bath FC
Sat 3 Wolverhampton Newhampt
on FC
Sun 4 tbc --- Sheffield, Greystones (see Nov 12 alt)
Mon 5 to Wed 7 available
Thu 8 York, Black Swan FC (with a likely additional gig on either Dec 7 or 9; tbc)
Fri 9 available
Sat 10 Hebden Bridge Trades Club
/tour ends

In May 2011 Dick's got a few Scottish gigs before heading south to tour in June 2011

JUNE 2011
Tue 7 or Wed 8 available
Thu 9 Frome, Merlin Theatre & Arts Centre
Fri 10 Marlborough Folk-Roots
Sat 11 Bristol, Ash Keys Music
Sun 12 off
Mon 13 Farnham Maltings
Tue 14 Winchester Railway
Wed 15 off
Thu 16 St Albans, Redbourne FC
Fri 17 London, Goose Is Out
Sat 18 Barnt Green, Shining Friends
Sun 19 or Mon 20 available
Tue 21 Northampton FC
Wed 22 or Thu 23 available
Fri 24 Dentdale Music and Beer Festival
Sat 25 Glasgow/Milngavie
Wed 29 tbc --- Aboyne Arts Festival, Aberdeenshire

JULY 2011 - CANADA (with Jason Wilson Band www.jasonwilsonmusic.com/)
In July Dick heads off to Canada until possibly early August for festival gigs with the Jason Wilson Band (left) from Toronto with whom he appeared so successfully at Celtic Connections in Jan 2010.

After the band's new album ('The Lion Rampant') comes out over here in 2012 featuring Dick, Dave Swarbrick and The Bevvy Sisters we'll be fixing to tour this line-up here probably in the summer - this is just a bit special!

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSy1_wBdkiE for the band's take on "My Love is like a Red Red Rose (Burns) and "No Woman No Cry" (Bob Marley) - this segue really does work (inc. a neat fiddle solo from Dave Swarbrick) and after being broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland last autumn produced quite a flurry of interest.

In fact, and following on from that, I've been told that United Airlines flights into British Columbia will be playing 'My Love is Like a Red Red Rose/No Woman, No Cry' in July in advance of the Vancouver festival. Can't be bad! :)

Edinburgh - Michael Marra - Friday 28 February 2011

Michael Marra's imminent Edinburgh Queen's Hall gig is selling well. With something like 300 tickets now away for the gig and only about 10 days yet to go - it's time to start getting along to QH box office if you've been thinking about going to this gig (or even if you haven't!).

Mairi Campbell is opening the show at 8pm and the doors/bar open at 7pm.

QH box office, t: 0131-668 2019.

Sheffield - Dick Gaughan - Su 28 Feb 2011 - SOLD OUT

DICK GAUGHAN's gig at The Greystones in Sheffield on Sunday 27 February 2011 is sold-out. Unfortunately a prior commitment back home in Edinburgh on Monday 28 February prevents a second gig taking place. We hope however that another gig will take place in Sheffield later on in 2011, possibly during Dick's annual November-December UK tour.

Dick Gaughan - Celtic Connections concert review from Herald

This HERALD review comes with 5-stars attached! After Dick's 40 years on the road some folk might say that it's about time as well! :)

(see earlier blog for Dick's gigs in Ireland and the UK until June 30 2011)
